Common Questions
VA Combined Rating Calculator — FAQ
The VA does not simply add your ratings. It combines them using a "whole person" method: it starts from 100% healthy and each disability reduces the healthy percentage that is left. So a 60% and a 20% condition combine to 68% — not 80% — which the VA then rounds to the nearest 10%, giving 70%.
Because you can never be more than 100% disabled. Each additional condition only applies to the healthy percentage that remains, so ratings stack with diminishing returns. That is why two 50% conditions combine to about 75%, not 100%.
When you have disabilities affecting both arms, both legs, or paired skeletal muscles, the VA adds an extra 10% of the combined value of those paired conditions before combining them with your other ratings. It gives a small boost that recognizes the added impact of losing function on both sides.
After combining all of your conditions, the VA rounds the result to the nearest 10%. A combined value of 64% rounds down to 60%, while 65% or higher rounds up to 70%.
Yes. VA monthly compensation is tied to your combined rating in 10% steps, plus adjustments for dependents. Moving up a bracket — say from 60% to 70% — is a meaningful jump in your monthly payment.
